Since 2017, Holly Lyons has been a Behavior Specialist & Dog Trainer who works with Personal Clientele, Celebrities and for Karma Dog Training. She is certified with CCPDT, the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers and specializes in teaching 100% Positive Reinforcement Training & Effective Communication between people and their furry family members. It's a Win-Win!
When Holly was younger, she was best known for being a Professional Skateboarder. She is a 5 times X Games Athlete & World Cup Skateboarding Champion. She was one out of three females in the World at the time to have her own Signature Skateboard Shoe. It was an incredible opportunity to immortalize her beloved Chihuahua Rerun, by making him the icon for her shoe. For two years, they outsold the other signature skateboard shoes made by her male counterparts for the company Power Shoes.
Animals have been a big part of Holly's life since she was a child. As an adult, she had a beautiful fluffy calico cat named Coral and a deep love affair with her Chihuahua Rerun, who passed in the Spring of 2016. After he passed she began volunteering at the Lange Foundation because she felt so connected to dogs and had to be around them. Holly wanted to do what she could to help and speak up for animal rights since they are not able to speak for themselves. Volunteering for hours everyday led to a serendipitous event where she began working for Karma Dog Training. It felt like the Universe or her dog brought her to dog training where she was able to learn and teach, give and receive love from so many wonderful puppies and dogs.
Holly grew up with an entrepreneurial mindset. She has always had a passion for Sports and Fitness, and for teaching and coaching others. She went to U.C. Santa Cruz and received a degree in Business Economics. After being a Professional Skateboarder, she became a Health & Wellness Coach, a Certified Yoga Teacher, and then she fell in love with dog training and wanted to learn as much as she could so she became a Certified Dog Trainer & Behavior Specialist. It felt like she found where she belonged.
Holly is a Full Time 'In Home Private Trainer' for puppies and dogs. She also teaches Puppy Kindergarten every week at Karma Dog's Flagship location in Beverly Hills. Living in LA, she has had the opportunity to work with many celebrity clientele, all kinds of people in the entertainment industry, and so many other interesting and wonderful people from all walks of life and their doggies.
She specializes in Basic Obedience, Behavior Modification - Aggression & Fear, Socialization, Chewing/Biting, Barking & Jumping, Potty Training, Leash Aggression or Reactivity, Loose Leash Walking, Tricks, Agility and more.
There are Laws of Learning and the Basic 3 Laws are: 1. the Law of Readiness, or wanting to learn something. 2. The Law of Exercise, or practice and repetition. 3. The Law of Effect, which states that humans are more likely to learn when they feel satisfied or are rewarded for learning, rather than punished for not learning. People need to feel good in order to retain motivation. Our puppies and dogs, or animal companions feel the same way too.
It has been scientifically proven that positive reinforcement training with animals is more effective and humane than old-school traditional harsh, dominant or punishment based training. Positive Reinforcement Training is choice based training. Everyone, including a dog feels more confident and connected to their teacher, parent or caregiver when they are allowed to think and make choices versus feeling verbally or physically forced to do something, or to submit. This type of teaching can go beyond dog training and can teach people how to communicate more effectively with their family and friends as well.
Over 50% of dog training is teaching the human how to be the best teacher, leader, guide or trainer for their dog once any trainer leaves. Dog training is learning and communicating effectively with our furry family member or friend. Learning new things is like building new muscles in our minds, for both human and dog. Training is also a great way to build and strengthen the bond between human and canine. We learn to understand each other better and create safety, healthy routines, predictability and trust.
The best part about positive reinforcement training is that it's a win-win for both parties. When a human teaches their dog to do a certain behavior, the human wins, plus the dog wins because they get a reward + praise (marking the behavior) and maybe a great pet/massage for doing that certain behavior. Humans and dogs are on the same team winning the game of life together. Smiles and tail wags all around.
Puppies and dogs are like furry little athletes that are ready to learn and connect. Our goal is to to create structure and teach them how to play the game called life together in our home and out in the world. And thrive together feeling the joy when we work as a team. When it comes to learning new behaviors or when an athlete plays a sport, one has to be excited to engage and learn through practice and repetition. It's important to be rewarded for good behavior in order for anyone to repeat the behaviors they are learning and be good in real life situations or at game day, so to speak.
It's best to keep dog training positive not just for our puppy or dog's sake, but also for the humans sake. If a person is having a good time being the leader, teacher or trainer, then we feel good and our puppy or dog will want to please us more. Positive Training can be the best part of any dogs day because they get our full attention, praise, treats, pets and/or good times for learning to communicate, interact and engage better with you. Whenever people get upset or angry, we make ourselves more unhappy and unsatisfied, and it can create opposing sides instead of being on the same team. In reality, our puppy or dog may simply need more practice, patience and support instead of fear or aggression from a human.
The focus in Holly's work is to make training a puppy or dog as easy and as clear as possible since both parties are learning. The more we can teach our dog to use their mind, the more we are creating infinite possibilities to improve their quality of life and waking up their potential. There is a bright and beautiful star ready to shine in each and every puppy or dog!
Dogs give us unconditional love and many other gifts. One of the greatest gifts we can give to our puppies or dogs is to teach them to think and use the muscle of their mind in a way they cannot teach themself or each other. It’s important to be compassionate, patient and come from a place of love and support so our dogs mind stays open, curious and motivated to learn and grow with us.
As an eternal student, Holly always continues to learn as she teaches. Each puppy or dog is unique, so there is no one size fits all. She focuses on getting to know the dog she is working with and dives deep into each of her clients concerns and goals so she can deliver the best results possible in the least amount of time.
Einstein proved that everything is energy. So, people get to learn a lot about their own energy and how it affects their puppy or dog. Holly gives people tools along with homework or action steps so they can take what they learn from their trainings into their daily life and use with great success.
Holly’s mission is to do her part in raising the vibration on the planet so we as people have more compassion, respect and understanding for all other species beginning with our dogs. It is important to start with (1) respect in order to (2) build trust and a bond, if we want (3) to have loving relationships.
